Post from Edgar,
I quit twice in my lifetime. The first time I was getting out of the Army and had a pound of Kosovian tobacco which I was taking home. I quit for four weeks, while I was getting de-classified. Once I got home with my duty-free package, I smoked like a fiend until it was gone.
A year ago I had a heart attack. After 10 days in hospital without a smoke, the doctor said, "Only a fool smokes after a heart attack."
I needed a strong reason to quit that made sense, this was a strong reason that made sense! Most people struggled to quit, for me it was easy, since I had a reason. Quitting cold turkey worked for me, I hope others will try it. I tried to cut back before, but that only worked for a short while.
I used to love singing and now I can sing again! My voice came back 3 months after I quit. - Thanks, Edgar -
Mark writes,
It's great reading about people with success at quitting smoking. Both my parents died from cancer. I started smoking early and was told again and again I should quit. I was too young and healthy to care.
Years later, I starting to notice many places did not allow smoking. Also, I noticed many friends and family didn't have to smoke, why did I? My desire to quit was forming, growing. I thought, "Maybe I can quit!"
I set a date, spending the time leading up to it by carefully imagining how my black lungs and clogged arteries were getting worse. When the day arrived, I was actually excited about it.
I have been 100% smoke free now for over two years. July 4th is my "Freedom Day" from smoking. I am finally ready to tackle that next thing, my weight gain. I gained over 40 pounds when I quit, now I know I have some willpower. I have some confidence knowing I can tackle problems in my life and win.
- Love and hope, Mark -
Susan's Story
My name is Susan, I am a 54. Two years ago I was diagnosed with emphysema. My sister died slowly of emphysema at 59, my father died of a stroke, both of them smoked. I remember them smoking even when they were sick and dying. I did not want to put my husband and children through that.
Most of my success in quitting smoking after 38 years I owe to getting a great job at the library. Nicotine patches helped me with the physical urges. I always had cinnamon candy and sugarless gum in my purse. It was important to keep busy with things where smoking was not easy, like playing computer games, going to the movies and libraries. Evenings were tough for me, I started going to bed earlier and watched television.
The whole thing was easier than I thought it would be. I thought I was one of those people who could not quit. The hardest thing was that first day, not giving in. I did it one day at a time, and I still try to remember, "One day at a time."
Chocolate and Cigarettes
My addiction to cigarettes lasted thirty years. I remember the hardest part when I quit, cigarettes were so visible in all the stores! I could not avoid them, they were always placed near the checkout or exit. There they were, in bright-colored packs, so innocent, wrapped in sparkly cellophane, inviting as a box of chocolates.
Today, sure, we now know the truth about smoking, but that still means nothing to people who are addicted.
Cigarettes should be less visible. Get rid of the source. Put them under the counter and out of sight, especially of young people. They do not belong alongside the chocolates!
