Gretchen's Story

Mother Battles To Recover And Live

I am a 35 year old single mother, 4 years ago I was diagnosed with emphysema. My 10 year old son watches me suffer daily. He watches me gag and choke like a monster, he runs to get tissues and pail. He watches my eyes bug out, fighting for breath each time I have an attack. He has no one to play tag or throw a ball walk to the park with. These common blessings are taken for granted by other kids. I have to plan my life in 3 hour installments. If I leave somewhere, I must be back in 3 hours to nebulise. A portable nebuliser is necessary if I fear it will be longer. Every activity has to be planned around my disease. Camping out is impossible, trees don't have plug-ins for the nebulizer. Life marches on...

I have been trying to quit smoking for 4 years, since the diagnosis. It is the single most daunting challenge I have ever faced. I have spent big bucks for hypnosis, counseling, quit programs, lollipops, books, patches, and gum. I tried doing it for my son, who I love so much. The harder I tried, the more stress piled on, and I would smoke even more. I needed to be removed from all temptations, locked-up with no key, until the awful cravings stopped. I wanted to be locked-up, how else could I stop?

And so I searched...

After countless phone calls and useless paperwork, I found nowhere to go for a nicotine addict. There are inpatient rehab centres for every addiction including co-dependency, but absolutely zilch for smoking rehabilitation. I pleaded with doctors, lawyers, hospitals, and government agencies. Finally, after five months some professors took me as an understudy on a PHD thesis project. They placed me in hospital for 7 days on anti-depressants, gave me a supply of nicotine patches, and wished me success. Thank you for that helpful start. It has been 8 weeks since I walked out and it is still so hard, but I have some breathing room between myself and and my last cigarette. I want to live, I won't give up.

Since I began fighting to quit smoking, I met many people who feel exactly the same. They want to give it up so much, but just cannot do it alone. This nation, each state, each major city, each large city, needs a place for these people to go to get help, a nicotine rehab unit.
