Martha's Story

Needlework helped fill in the hole

I started smoking at 16, and smoked about 2 packs a day until I was well into my thirties.

I tried cold turkey, hypnosis, acupuncture, counseling, stop smoking programs, reading books, and nothing worked for me. But when I began having asthmatic symptoms, and shortnesss of breath attacks, I began seriously thinking about quitting again. After I got married, I decided I just had to quit somehow. My best friend worked for a therapist whose expertise lay in analyzing various brain wave patterns of addicts. The therapist hooked me up to a brain wave machine. We were attempting to find what particular activites for me had the effect of creating alpha brain waves (the relaxing type).

Her theory was that smoking addicts are trying to self-medicate a brain chemistry lacking enough serotonin or dopamine, or feeding a brain addiction to adrenaline. When that smoker stops smoking, the brain reverts to a theta pattern; (agitated, anxious, and irritated),and seeks a nicotine fix to return to alpha state relaxation. We were looking to find the other activities that resulted in significant alpha state brain relaxation.

Exercise works for many people, especially young ones, by releasing endorphins, a powerful source of adrenaline. But exercise had never been my thing, so I needed another activity that worked. We tried a variety; relaxation tapes, Mozart, whale songs, deep-breathing... none of them worked. We kept trying until we found my one thing that worked; needlework. Yup, crocheting and sewing, especially freehand from my mind's eye, soothed my brain into significant alpha relaxation waves.

My doctor prescribed Klonopine, a mild tranquilizer, instructing me take one when I got real uptight. I took about 12 over that first month, I tried to be careful not to get addicted to these also.

Oh yes, and I crocheted, and crocheted, and crocheted. I ended up with 3 queen size afghans, also 2 blankets for my nieces, a warmer for any baby to come, and 12 Christmas doilies. I put down my crochet hooks, and have not picked them up since! I also have not smoked a puff since then.

Find that activity that gets you to your alpha state (relaxed and/or focused). Hold onto it until your fingers are blue, and hold onto it until you know you are free and clear of withdrawals.
