Terrible News Wakes Her Up
I was a heavy smoker, 2 packs a day for 25 years. I quit 9 years ago. I still use nicotine mint gum for physical cravings, but the gum did not help me quit. 9 years ago some terrible times brought me to finally quit.
July 20th, 1991: The doctor gave us his opinion. My husband, who smoked less than a pack a day, has lung cancer with a four inch mass on his left lung, they will need to take a biopsy of the mass to be sure. This opinion was enough for him, he bought the patch and quit that day. I love him and want him around for a long time, so I quit too to support him.
I tried different things to quit in the past, but my heart was not in it. Today, smoking is simply not an option. I believe in the power of prayer, but a person has to have a strong, true desire to quit.
Even if the biopsy returns benign, we are both convinced smoking is too great a danger. If it is cancer, we will fight with faith for the long term. The long haul ahead would be made so much more difficult if we smoked, we are not fools.
I hope my story helps someone, before they find themselves in our situation.
A couple of weeks ago, the biopsy returned positive, my husband has lung cancer. Returning home, we saw a UPS package on the front steps. It was 3 cartons of cigarettes we had ordered online. We sent it back immediately. A week later, the secretary from that company called, asking why we returned it. I shouted, "He has lung cancer!"
There was hardly a pause on the other end when the woman asked, "Oh, so there was nothing wrong with the shipment?" I was stunned. What part of that shipment was not wrong? Nothing good ever comes from smoking.
